Elements & Clothing: WATER

Clothing can represent the inner feelings about ourselves. It may be considered a superficial mode of expression and yet it is not less superficial than anything else we decide to align with our daily activities. Clothing can have an impact on how we start to feel not only by the nature of colour but also fabric and cut.
If you're feeling dried out, burnt out, masculine, rough and sharp, it might be worth investigating the qualities of water in your attire. From an Ayurvedic perspective, consider what you need more of in your life (listen to the words you use often) and look for the angle in your wardrobe. Sometimes it's the material, but sometimes it might just be the effect that is required.
Allow the draping and FLOWING effect of silk to move around you as you walk. It's shimmery effect takes on the mirrored feeling of water. They are starting to do studies on the immense benefits of wearing silk from cooling hot flushes to reducing the effects of rosacea and even helping with thrush. It is also considered a natural protectant of negative energies and worn often by spirit seekers.
Being in water can be therapy to increase the MOIST quality but if that is not possible, take with you a rose water spritzer in your handbag. Rose water cools over heated minds and has an affinity for cooling the eyes. Keeping well hydrated and doing a daily abhyanga (self oil massage) will retain the element of water. Feeling moist has a protective element to it. It will keep your immunity strong and allow prana to circulate more freely in your body. Food will also taste better the more hydrated you are.
Legs can tend to feel dry. Wearing satin style leggings can give you the feeling of SMOOTH. The skin is constantly taking in messages from the environment around you and we tend to focus on keeping the face moisturised without regard to the information from the rest of the skin on our body.
And sometimes it's just the elegance in attire that can add the SOFT quality to your demeanour. You hold yourself differently when shirts and jackets are tailored and the jewellery is rounded and feminine. Although tailoring may appear to obstruct the flow, it can also be thought of as containing the air that dries out/burns out. It provides form and shape and even seems to change our posture to alignment.
And if the Ice queen takes over and it's gets too COLD in your heart, the lack of passion can separate you from your fellow warm blooded humans. So remember, a quality is only medicinal in balance. ;)
